How to check your mental health benefits in ten minutes

Four questions to ask your insurer before your first appointment — and what the answers mean.

Enestine Tasong, DNP, PMHNP-BC4 min read · February 2026

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask these four questions. Write the answers down along with the reference number for the call.

One: is outpatient behavioral health covered under my plan, and is this provider in network? Two: do I have a deductible, and how much of it have I met? Three: what's my copay or coinsurance for an outpatient behavioral health visit? Four: do I need a referral or prior authorization?

If you have a high deductible that hasn't been met, you may pay the full contracted rate for early visits — that's normal, and it's worth comparing against our self-pay rate.

You can also just send us your plan details and we'll verify benefits for you before you come in.
